The next question is, should I have an empty stomach for meditation? The general answer is yes, but that doesn’t mean that you would go on a two-day fast for meditation. If you give a gap of 3 to 4 hours between a meal and your meditation session that will give you the best experience during your session. There are two different ways of looking at it one is a somewhat scientific easy explanation where you can imagine very well yourself that your digestion process might interfere in the meditation session and all your physical attention is in the process of digestion once you have eaten food and your mind is also a bit lazy. So it’s not the ideal setup, an ideal preparation for meditation where you would want your body to be relaxed, your mind to be relaxed and not interfering in the process of meditation. And there is a esoteric explanation to it as well. Yogi’s have classified prana into five major categories one of them is called Samana and this is the prana that is responsible for the stomach region where in the physical body it is responsible for processes like digestion but also it is responsible for the balance between ido and Pingala these are the two energy channels in your body out of the three. The third one being Sushmana which is right in the middle ide on your left Pingala on your right and Sushmana in the middle of those two. During meditation the energy flows in sushmana and there is a balance between ida and Pingala. So to think about it if your Samana prana is busy in the digestion process and is not is not helping to attain a balance between ida and pingala the energies of your right half of the body and the left half of the body, the yin and yang, you would have some difficulties to move into meditation.
