the first stage of Jesuit formation is called mission before entering the Society of Jesus candidates go through a lengthy application process if the man is accepted to the order he heads to the novitiate for entrance day and for the next two years the novitiate will be his home in our part of the world there are five divisions corresponding to five regions of the US and Canada division is a time for learning about the order also time for experiencing Jesuit ministry and confirming that a man is a good fit for Jesuit life the men in efficient are called novices your days are spent in the classroom studying the Jesuit constitutions and other foundational documents the rest of the time is a routine of Prayer daily Mass house chores and ministry and local community and you as some recreation and fun two novices are also sent away from the division for weeks or months at a time for what are called experiments sate Ignatius wanted novices to learn greater dependence on God and being contacted the poor and suffering so he devised a series of experiences with that aim one of those experiments is a pilgrimage in which novices are sent on the road for several weeks with little or no money and must survive on the hospitality of strangers other experiments typically involve working with the sick and the poor learning Spanish and a long experiment of full-time Jesuit ministry for five or six months when I was a novice I worked with migrants on the Mexican border and developmentally disabled people in Seattle both were really great every novice also undertakes a 30 day silent retreat based on the Spiritual Exercises of st. Ignatius during the long retreat as it's called they learn to know Jesus much more intimately and learn how to pray as a Jesuit it's also a time for confirming their vocation calling after two years novices profess first vows perpetual vows of poverty chastity and obedience at which point they become either Jesuit scholastics who will continue training toward priestly ordination or Jesuit brothers who will continue formation as lay brothers of the society newly vowed scholastics and brothers are sent from the novitiate to the next stage of formation called first studies which we'll explore in the next video
