And it came to pass in those days, that there went out a decree from Caesar Augustus that all of the inhabited earth should be enrolled. This enrollment was made when Cyrenius was the governor of Syria. And all went to be enrolled, everyone into his own city. And Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into Judea, into the city of David, which is called Bethlehem, because he was of the house and the family of David, to be enrolled with Mary his betrothed wife, being great with child. And it came to pass, that while they were there, the days were accomplished that she should bring forth; and she brought forth her firstborn Son, and wrapped Him in swaddling-clothes, and laid Him in the manger, because there was no room for them in the inn. And there were in the same country shepherds, abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night. And behold, the angel of the Lord stood by them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them, and they feared with great fear. And the angel said to them, Fear not, for behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy which shall be for all people. For to you is born this day a Savior, who is Christ the Lord, in the city of David. And this shall be the sign to you: you will find the Babe wrapped in swaddling-clothes, laid in a manger. And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host, praising God and saying, Glory in the highest to God, and on earth peace, good will among men. And it came to pass, that after the angels were gone away into heaven, the shepherds said one to another, Let us now go even to Bethlehem, and see this saying which has come to pass, which the Lord has made known to us. And they came in haste, and they found Mary and Joseph, and the Babe lying in a manger. And when they had seen, they made known abroad the saying which was spoken to them concerning this little Child. And all who heard marveled at those things which were spoken to them by the shepherds. But Mary kept all of these sayings, pondering them in her heart. And the shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things which they had heard and seen, as it was spoken to them.
