I’m Nicole Rousmaniere I’m the IFAC
Honda curator of Japanese arts. Welcome to my corner. In 2015 we wanted to do an
exhibition of three generations, with Tetsuya Chiba, Hoshino YukiNobu and Nakamura Hikaru. So we went to meet Nakamura she was fantastic and she was
very cooperative and in fact she donated a whole story and she said you can
choose but I would think you should have Christmas. I thought oh! This will be
interesting… So with a little trepidation, we
got this fantastic story and we displayed it and it was really, really good the only challenge that we had was in translating
her work because she uses really witty language and witty puns and we wanted to make sure that it worked in English and there was no English translation up to
that point. You see the family home. You see a Christmas dinner. You see a church. You see a priest. And he’s hearing the confession of this man right here and this man is telling him that he’s jealous. We look at it we can actually
see that it’s Jesus. Then we kind of flashback to what happened
that morning and we see Buddha and Buddha and Jesus are together and what’s
happening here is that Jesus is leaving he’s a little bit excited, he’s a little
bit, you know, it’s winter he’s got his cap on. and his shades on and Buddha’s wondering what’s up. Well, actually it’s the 25th of December it’s
Jesus’s birthday and Jesus wants to see how he’s going to be celebrated in Japan
on his birthday and Buddha is worried because Buddha knows something else is
going to happen. Jesus goes to a department store and he sees this huge
cake he gets really excited, he thinks it’s for him, and finally Jesus
is realising that all the people around who are excited on the birthday cake and
the trees it’s for Santa Claus. So he’s still optimistic he actually
sees someone dressed like Santa Claus and he calls Buddha to check and he says
“Is this some kind of joke? Of course they’re planning a party for me!”
and then Buddha is getting very very worried Jesus is saying “Maybe it’s just
the residents of Takikawa” where they’re living “have organised some kind
of mega birthday surprise? and you must have been told to keep quiet about it I
think you’re the only one who will let me in on the secret.”
But you see Buddha is getting really worried Buddha doesn’t want Jesus to be
upset or or worried. Here she writes “The self affirmation of the Son of God is as hard as steel.” Jesus is finally coming to terms with
the fact there will be no surprise for the people but actually Buddha has
lovingly bought him a birthday cake and Buddha says can you please go to the
patisserie and pick it up. So Jesus goes to the patisserie and he’s welcomed by a
woman selling the cakes and he looks and he sees that they are Christmas cakes in
Japan which means they’re all with Santa decorations! Jesus says
“decorations any other than Santa Claus?” and she said “yes from this selection are
you looking for anything in particular?” “I’d kind of like one of me half-naked
and dying they should at least have one of those.” and she’s really shocked
you can see the sweat coming down “Would you really want to put that on a cake? We don’t do human figures.” “But Santa’s an old man in a red costume in a hat!” Well she says “Well Santa’s more like a mascot and he’s chubby and cute.” But that
doesn’t make Jesus very happy. “So no one will put me on a cake because I’m too skinny?!” “Why would you want to be on a cake?” “Okay put all of them on I
will eat them and put on weight. I’m feeling pretty sad.” Buddha will be worried about me if he sees me in this state and he walks off. Jesus says right here, remember we start here, he says “I should chill out somewhere” Then he goes in and he sees himself in a church and he says “When I
think of how much worse it was then feel a little calmer now.” and then you
see in the church pew right here “I came here without thinking” he’s saying
“I’ve avoided churches until now why today of all days?”
Here he hears from this young boy “Mum! Today’s Jesus birthday isn’t it?” “Yes” “Ah, surely they’re speaking about me this
time” Jesus is a little happier “But they could
also mean a TV character with the same name.” “That little crib figure of Jesus
at the church entrance that was so cute wasn’t it?” “Jesus was born in a stable” “Blessings to Jesus.” “Thank you Jesus” “Amen”
Jesus, here he is right there, Jesus, Jesus he’s hearing this all the time he says
“I’m happier now but actually I feel embarrassed! I feel ten times more
embarrassed than when Buddha caught googling myself.” WOW! So here he says, I can’t bear it anymore I’m gonna crawl into a hole! Hey, this looks promising!” and he runs in there and where is it? It’s the confessional! And he runs into the priest
that we saw in the very beginning and the priest says “So you’re feeling
jealous about Santa Claus” If things go on like this I might act impulsively and descend to the Vatican and expel Saint Nicholas so I’ve come instead to talk to
you Father I know you won’t repeat what you’ve heard in the confession will you?
Knowing that I can tell you that I am Jesus Christ.” and this priest is saying
“Oh here’s a lamb going seriously astray” He doesn’t realise that actually he’s
talking to Jesus Christ he says right here he is playing along and he says
“Thank you for always taking care of us.” and Jesus says “I apologize for being
such a misery” “No, as you say Christmas in Japan is rather strange.” And the ending of the story is really kind of beautiful, The priest says “Someone must be waiting for you.” and Jesus says “Yes
there is someone a friend remembered my birthday and also ordered a cake in an
in advance he’d been preparing tasty food since
early this morning. How silly I am I must rush back to
him.” “You have a lovely friends mr. Jesus God will forgive your sins
let us pray together and that you should hurry home. So here they’re praying and
“Yes thank you very much” and the priest says very happily “Yes thanks to God” “Amen and to Buddha!” because that’s his roommate. and the priest then gets a little unhappy he says “Oh he’s a Buddhist” *blub* And then we go back to Buddha and Buddha says “Jesus, is there a message in here?”
and you see all the Santas have fallen and they’ve all melted into
to the Christmas cake and it’s “just like King Herod’s massacre of the innocence
because he was he feared for his throne you’ve killed all the Santa’s because
they were more popular!” Jesus says “no no it’s just that I wanted to gain weight
and took too long to bring the cake back it’s not what you think!”
Anyway, that’s how Jesus spends his birthday. This is just one story of
many that this chronicles. It goes seasonally it’s amazing you go through
January all the different seasons and so to find more I think you’re gonna have
to come to the British Museum. Thank you very much for joining me on our manga
adventure today there are many more curators that are doing many different
types of adventures through the British Museum YouTube channel I hope you’ll all
subscribe but first of all I want you to tell us what you would like to see what
is your favorite manga and what manga you would like to see the British Museum
collect please write it in on the comment section and subscribe to the
YouTube channel of the British Museum thanks.

Sain Young Man is great, I love it! You should get also Berserk by Miura Kentaro and Vagabond by Inoue Takehiko. Love your channel, keep up the good work!

Well, I wish "Vagabond" wasn't dropped, it's art is awesome, and the Musashi novel looks better there than the 70's (?) movies. Also I love Watamote (私がモテナイのはどう考えてもお前らが悪い), the story of my life. It'd be great for an expo, specially with the animated version and it's art style variations (cubism?). Thanks for the awesome content!

I love this! Three of my favorites right now are Maiko-san Chi no Makanai-san by Koyama Aiko it is really interesting, Gakuen Babysitters by Tokeino Hari is super cute and touching and a for a funny manga Gokushufudou: The Way of the House Husband by OONO Kousuke is both silly and clever.

Expectations not high, but that was a great story with wonderful art. Totally British Museum Curator's Corner grade stuff, my fears were unfounded. Also thinking if anything ever ends religious wars over who's God can beat up who, it may be a Marvel comics type God Squad with Buddha as the lead. It's a pretty childish argument so why not?
Just took a stroll through the comments. Going to take a wild guess all the angry people there aren't Buddhists. I know they do have a fringe element in places like Burma and WW2 Japan, but overall not the professional victim types.

Ah, I remember reading this manga a little bit, for the first few chapters, at one point. I remember it had a very endearing awkwardness to the characters' dealings. The slightly-cringe-while-laughing kind of humour.

Interesting, but whether you believe it or not. The real story is much more interesting. The God of creation comes to earth as a man to warn us of a coming judgement , but also a future in a new perfect creation. Born in poverty ,rejected by men and crucified as a criminal on a cross. …..

This was great ..!

I would like if more people read Manga to others ..
Right to left , bottom half to top half ..
I't hard for beginners to get into them ..

She did an awesome job doing just that though ..

Thanks for making these for us ..
Appreciate yah ..!

Having been raised with Belgian and European BD, I always thought manga, was some violent, misogynistic oriented Japanese facsimile but clearly, I was very wrong. This story was extremely interesting and I regret not properly approaching manga before. I usually say everyone likes classical music, you just need to find your own type of classical music. It works for manga as well, so I guess I didn't follow my own advice. Great upload!

Classifying which are worthy would imediately bias the result.
No objective selection can be made.

Asking what lense would create the desired effect would be more usefull to ask.
And before that, the museum should explain what effect is desired by it's collection.
Then, at last, can you ask which manga should be highlighted through this lense.

Otoyomegatari, "A Bride's Tale", is what I would recommend. It follows a series of plotlines surrounding various young couples in the 1800's, set primarily along the Silk Road. If you think that sounds boring, trust me, it isn't. And the artwork is absolutely breathtakingly gorgeous, so full of detail that I can scarcely believe the artist managed to finish so many chapters.

The only thing more disturbing than the Japanese' poor grasp of Christian theology is Christians' poor grasp of Christian theology.

I knew about Saint Oniisan manga before, but these videos make me nostalgic and also very happy that this very interesting form of media is appreciated by European scholars. I would recommend looking into Leviathan by Otsuka Eiji and Kinutani Yuu. It is a very dark and satirical manga, that comments on contemporary society as well as touching on body horror genre popular in Japanese culture.

Another outstanding video. I know that if I ever get a chance to visit the U.K., the British Museum will be one of my first stops.

Did a double take at who uploaded this on my feed. This is surreal! Getting Saint Oniisan read to you by a curator from the British Museum lmao

I can't tell you how happy I was when I saw the thumbnail. More of Japanese culture videos and more of Nicole please.

Thanks for the wonderful content. Is there a YouTube user or a department with videos as good as these or the longer ones in the Oriental Institute but related to the Far East?. Thanks in advance! =) .

Seeing two religious figureheads as millenial sitcom buddies with teenie-identity crises is unexpectedly awkward. Like no matter how your stance is towards religion, those characters have some weight to them, either you make fun of them, or you take them seriously. But turning them into late-teens with identity crises in a last-christmas-I-gave-you-my-heart atmosphere is just cringe as fuck, Im really kinda disgusted by that Idk why exactly, and the curator presenting this as something from her own kid or something…. uhhhh Just too much feel good pseudo-reality

こんにちは! I found this video from Japan.
It seems like a dream that Japanese cartoons are exhibited at the Great Britain Museum.

· · · But, it is generous for Britons to display cartoons that make Jesus and Buddha identical.

I would definitely like to go to the British Museum!

さようなら!

In 2019, everybody would just assume they're a couple. Can't two icons of religious worship just be very very good friends.

Wait what just happened? Only a moment ago I was watching an ancient wizard teach cuneiform writing. Now Buddha is buying Jesus a birthday cake.

One of the best manga in Japan. Family friendly and it takes a very unique view on religion only possible by multiple religious cultures like Japan.

As a Japanese who live in Japan, I would recommend a comic called ”大砲とスタンプ(Taiho to stamp, Cannon and Stamp)" by Rasenjin Hayami.
It is a "Fantasy" world war II manga, focused more on "Logistics troops" behind a desk, to support the long stretched war from "Fantasy" soviet like army.

Unfortunately, they are not as funny like "Thermae Romae" but I still think it is one example of manga variety in Japan.

My sister told me that there was an anime where Jesus and Buddha were roommates and now I learn that there are manga for that. I need to check it out now,

I think Historie, Kamimura and Taniguchi would fit well in the Museum's manga collection. But really there's so many great manga and mangaka that choosing is impossible.

I hope she reads a lot more manga like one piece and Naruto maybe evangelion if u wanna go deep religion and philosophy and depression lol … but so many manga stories have made me cried and happy fall of chair laughing, manga/anime are one of the best the best mediums of storytelling something the US is barley starting to grasp but not really — yet,,,, still someone show her one piece – that whole story is the greatest story ever told – if it ever gets finished. Lol

This is incredible- I love this presentation. I highly recommend this. It’s just amazing. I’m so looking forward to the Manga exhibit coming up. Kudos to the British Museum. Your Japanese collection is fantastic!

Wow that manga was sickly irreverent. It's not artistic, it's not clever, it's not inspirational, philosophical or deep… it's a display of theological ignorance. Congrats. It's depressing to think that this stupid story was showcased and celebrated.

I read the headling, snickered & thought of the Christian, Bhuddist, modern thought mix in Tokyo Godfather. The comic is an interesting take on modern use of J. H. Christ's un-birthday.

Iam amazed by this concept and story line
How amazing is this
And seasonal
Wow
Many blessings
🙏💝

My favorite manga to collect is JoJo's Bizarre Adventure. I am stoked to come to the museum next week and see an original page i have seen exhibited.

By the way, the reason I made this animation is just because it is interesting.
Japan has no religious colors at all.
It is clear compared to other countries.
Most people are non-religious.

I like Asians… I married one. I like manga. I am an atheist that mocks religion.

So when I call this utterly moronic drivel that has no business in the British Museum you know it isn't out of some sort of xenophobia/pro-religious slant. This is utter garbage I'm shocked how our society has degenerated so much as to allow this garbage.

I am certain this is out of some misguided attempt to be fair to all time periods and cultures…. it is bizarre and embarrassing to watch.

Why not have a Toddlers and Tiaras exhibit? What don't you care about sad southern women art? ethnocentrists!

Disgusting. Issue here is, st Nicholas was a real person who did real acts of kindness and giving. Christ the redeemer wasn't. Christmas has absolutely nothing to do with Jesus. It existed long long long before Jesus was even a twinkle in a writer's eye. There was no slaughter of innocence

of course the world loves this story that makes Jesus a jealous cry baby — just like Jesus said: the world HATES him.
