Is Religion A Crutch?

Atheists sometimes attack religion by saying it’s a crutch for the weak-minded they’ll say, “Religion is for those who can’t think for themselves; they need others to do it for them.” The purpose of the objection is to make the believer feel inadequate and create a perception that only atheists are among the intellectual elite. So how should we respond? First, the objection is not an argument against theism. The conclusion, “No god exists”, doesn’t follow from the premise, “Some people use religion as a crutch.” The atheist would have to give reasons why God doesn’t exist for it to be an argument against theism. This objection doesn’t do that. Second, even if some people use religion as a crutch, so what! The issue is not why some people belong to a religion, but whether the religion is true. Third, a theist could turn the table and say, atheism could be used as a crutch for those who don’t want to submit to God. Does that make atheism false? Of course not! And finally, what’s wrong with using a crutch if one is deficient? If you break your leg, using a crutch doesn’t suggest weakness, it’s actually the smart thing to do if you want to get around. As fallen human beings, we’re broken, we’re weak. Consequently, it’s not unreasonable to acknowledge we need help from God in our journey back to him. So a believer’s appeal to religion for direction in life is not a sign of intellectual weakness. It’s actually intelligent to do so because one realizes they don’t have all the answers. So, you think the whole universe is pointless then when we have no purpose but to go back. Well, i don't share that view, I think if an deities have set it up, then the intent is clearly to grow and proceed and not to go back, thus I think your journey is into the wrong direction.

If your hurt and need to use a crutch to walk around there is nothing wrong with that. But if you aren't hurt yet you still use that crutch to walk around then is something very wrong with that. The theists have made themselves belief that they need the crutch of god when they can walk just fine on their own.

The way I see it, the theist is walking around pretending that they have this crutch and that they need this crutch to walk at all. But there is no crutch and their pretending to use this nonexistence is causing them to trip and fall all over the place. The very thing that they think they need to walk, is what is making it impossible to walk correctly.

max plank was a lutheran. Einstein ended Up a pantheist
science was promoted by the catholic church in the monasteris in the middle ages. the idea of combining experimentation with maths came from two monks… universities and schools were made by religious orders etc.

weak minded? uhhh… no. hell no.

People are misunderstanding him when he says 'humans are weak and broken'. I think he meant to communicate that as humans, we all suffer and are prone to suffering. It's just a fact of life. Nothing is perfect for everyone and people experience the feeling of weakness in some form at some point in their lives, for whatever reason. But its not what we want to experience, and we all naturally want help when we are feeling weak, so naturally people turn to God (at least those who believe do). But that's not to say that all religious people view their religion as a crutch. It also doesn't mean that all humans are weak and broken. We are very powerful and capable. We just have weak tendencies and we struggle.

Actually it is the Psychologists and Geneticists who are the authorities on the Neuroscience behind how religions develop into a mental dependence and crutch in indoctrinated minds. The majority of people are vulnerable to this which is why so many billions follow the wide easy path of taking stories on Faith. Doesn't matter which religion of course, since the indoctrination process using rituals and other time tested methods over time is much the same in all the theistic religions. The effects on brain chemistry deep in subconscious mind have been well known, understood, and well documented fro many decades now. many of the called "spiritual" feelings and "experiences" in various religions can now be manifested in a Medical Lab using external brain probes to activate the beliefs they were trained over years to just accept and believe. So we know it's brain chemistry at work, not magic invisible gods. it's all very intense and real to the believers of course because who knows them better than their own master brain, the subconscious mind, that they are unaware of?
The Catholics are masters of indoctrination using rituals and dogma, and demeaning the followers telling them they are defective and weak and not to trust their own common sense and reasoning. Obey the Mother Church or face the consequences. It's quite a profitable Business selling dreams of a magic afterlife for cash on the collection plates. While Christianity on the whole is still slowly declining, the wise fiscal policies of the Catholics for investing in commercial ventures and building up their billions in reserves will serve them well for a long time to come. But about 2 million Americans are leaving Christianity each year now, fed up with its deceptions and greed for money. They have themselves to blame for the many predictions of how Islam will be the number one religion probably by the end of this century. interesting times. peace
