Doctor Who announced to fans it would be returning with series 12 in 2020. While many wait eagerly to find out what is going to happen to The Doctor (played by Jodie Whittaker) and her team, the official Twitter account has dropped a sneak preview   A teaser released on the official Doctor Who Twitter account has driven fans into speculation overdrive, as it hints at a return for Jodie Whittaker in two weeks’ time  This has come as a major surprise as The Doctor, last seen on New Year’s Day, wasn’t set to be seen on screen until 2020  The trailer, which appeared on Sunday night, shows the TARDIS materialising in deep space before spinning off and leaving the words, ‘Watch this space’ lingering in the stars  The fifteen-second clip ends with the show’s logo appearing along with the phrase, ‘Coming soon’   READ MORE Doctor Who season 12 spoilers: Time Lord to face fearsome Judoon  The clip itself carries the caption, “Make Space… 23 11.19 #DoctorWho”. Fans of the Doctor’s adventures have been excited by this announcement as the date is significant in the history of the long-running TV series  In 1963 the first-ever episode of Doctor Who aired, with William Hartnell playing The Doctor in an episode called An Unearthly Child  2019 will be the sci-fi’s show’s 56th anniversary.  To mark the fiftieth anniversary of Doctor Who a feature-length episode called The Day of the Doctor was broadcast on 23rd November 2013  One fan on Twitter asked if the trailer is for a bonus episode, ahead of the show’s slated return in 2020: “Christmas special? Series 12 trailer?  “Also what will the Doctor Who thing be for Children in Need? A minisode like previous years?” What’s provoked further speculation is that the show’s YouTube page titles the video “Doctor Who: Series 12”, some fans certain this announcement is pointing towards the next series arriving in the near future    At the moment there appears to be no room in the BBC One schedule on 23rd November for the show’s return, with game show The Hit List, smash-hit Strictly Come Dancing, and comedy juggernaut Michael McIntyre’s Big Show dominating the Saturday night  The release of the trailer follows another teaser which surfaced on the official Twitter feed on Halloween  Fans were again told to “Watch this space” and the picture chose a more dramatic and less colourful tone than previous shots of Whittaker’s Doctor  Rather than the bright colours which have characterised her Doctor in the past, the picture shows her in shadow, backlit by the TARDIS control room as she enters a dark environment     Trending READ MORE Doctor Who season 12 spoilers: Time Lord to face fearsome Judoon  Not that she’ll be alone – Bradley Walsh is back playing Graham O’Brien, while Tosin Cole returns as Ryan Sinclair  Alongside this, Mandip Gill is also returning as the Doctor’s companion Yasmin Khan   It comes after some fans think The Doctor is going to have to tackle Cyberman as the foes return in the new series
