Do Religions Really Cause Violence?

hey everyone thanks for tuning into test-tube plus today I'm trace this is episode five of five on our series about God if you haven't tuned in to our show before make sure you check out our other episodes about God we do five episodes in a row about one topic break it up so everybody understands it a little bit better and today we're asking the question that a lot of people ask when they come to religion and that is do religions cause violence I think the important thing to point out here is the cause part we'll come back to that why does religion seem to connect to violence at all I mean throughout history we have religions tied to massive tragedies like the Crusades in 1095 all the way into 1291 we've got the Inquisition in 1478 we've got the conflicts in Northern Ireland that in some cases are still ongoing we've got the Holocaust in the 20th century extremism in the Middle East that's going on now which is connected to 9/11 here in the United States and Isis in Iraq and Syria but that's not really what's going on those things connect sure but this isn't religions fault Richard Dawkins a famous atheist wrote in his 2013 autobiography that religion is the principal label and the most dangerous one by which are they as opposed to a we can be identified and that's what it's all about it's this us-versus-them dynamic religion is just the easiest way for those groups to self-identify and thus separate from each other and oppose each other but if you look deeper these conflicts aren't based on religion they're based on politics they're based on economics they're motivated by power they aren't faith-based at their root for example history teaches that the Crusades was a holy war that lasted 200 years but in reality was really more of a land grab basically there are two camps of thought on this the Marxist influenced materialist theory which argues that the Crusades were only economically motivated there were massive economic changes taking place across Western Europe that put the financial security of the region in jeopardy and thus the First Crusade begins in about ten ninety six the Muslim world was really strong so Europe needed a unified rallying cry and came through religion religion was the way to get all of these countries to work together so sure it was pitched as a holy war but like all wars in Europe at the time it was more about the spoils of the war and about land Europe takes more land Europe gets more wealth if this doesn't sound much like religion to you it's because it's not it's about politics and if you look at most major large-scale efforts and conflicts there are political issues at their root and not religious ones although religious banners are usually the ones being flown the conflict in Northern Ireland is between Protestants and Catholics but it's really about Irish independence and it's a fight between Irish nationalists and England for that independence World War two in part was a result of harsh economic problems going on in Europe at the time Germany and a bunch of other nations on the losing side of World War one felt disenfranchised and impoverished and Hitler used this national moment to bolster a following which eventually did lead to the Holocaust and religious violence they needed a scapegoat and religion came in to play and it didn't start there obviously this was just a way to kind of boost the national mood and gain political power even the current conflict with Isis has economic political and social causes at its root scientists think that people are joining Isis because they have a passionate need to write some perceived wrong to address some sort of injustice to restore honor to those from whom it's been taken this movement started in a poor war-torn part of the world people in those situations feel powerless they feel victimized and that feeling is fueling Isis it's not the religious belief that is just a way to bring people together what is actually fueling it is these other economic problems these other political problems some of Isis's recruitment techniques capitalize on that there are literally reef rending lonely kids all over the world who feel isolated and using the internet to do that and reports are showing that the recruiters can reach out and fill this social void and a recruit and peddling them this Islamic foundation to bring them into the fold if it were just about really only religion then Isis and al-qaeda would theoretically get along because they have the same religious basis but with different ways of practicing it and looking at it they both be on the same side and they're not because it's about power and it's about control religion like we said at the top of this is just the label used to give a clear us versus them dynamic I'm not saying that religion isn't a part of war or a part of violence there are absolutely people who in the name of religion commit atrocities but even then it's hard to argue that there aren't more atrocities or at least the same number of atrocities attributed to politics to power and to economics and as my buddy strong bad says to say otherwise is problematic all of these are religious groups and your religion of course influences what you're going to say what you're going to do but at the root of every war or conflict is the division of people and religion isn't why people get divided and if we have learned anything from this episode on god it's that religion builds communities and it works within other groups and separately in parallel to a lot of different groups sure the KKK burns crosses but they're not a holy religious group they use religion to gain power many feel former president george w bush used his religion to gain political power and influence but it wasn't about his religion he wanted to be president religion is for some about symbolism and that's a good way to think about it religion is the flag not the fighting force we did it you guys we made it we made it through another series on something really big and this one was I mean pretty big I hope you all thoroughly enjoyed it let me know how you felt about this series down in the comments and subscribe for more test-tube plus and make sure you come back next week we're going to have a series on conspiracies we have been reading the comments we have been seeing you guys talking about it and we are going to tackle it it's going to be so make sure you come back to that thanks for watching

I think you are wrong on Islam. Islam is unique when compared to most religion. That is why people in the west don't understand it.

You can't be an innocent participant. If religion gets in the mix of things, religion plays a big role in those conflicts that use it as a banner. It's a key ingredient and if it were to be removed, then things would play out differently.

When religion has so much power over government, it's impossible to isolate politics from religion. The fact is as much as you might think people use their religion as a tool, they deeply believe their religion. It's not a tool, the people are a tool being motivated by religion. The genocide in Rwanda is a great example of this.

Religion is dangerous when man-made without Scripture. "Religion should unite all hearts and cause wars and disputes to vanish from the face of the earth, give birth to spirituality, and bring life and light to each heart. If religion becomes a cause of dislike, hatred and division, it were better to be without it, and to withdraw from such a religion would be a truly religious act." ~ Baha'i Faith

For those who enjoyed this video, Id like to recommend this video of a Korean Zen master speaking on why religions fight:

Nowadays are just Sad, So many people hating on another religion just because One or a Little group of it that caused war. Religion never told us to do something bad, It was the people who do that not the religion. Animal never do something as worse the human did, they just do it Naturaly. We human somehow just the worst most Inteligent living creature on the planet

Jesus should come back so we could crucify him again for all the pain he has brought on earth, it goes for all other religions.

So you are saying,, church is a socially club,, only for the people looking for stopping the shiftless people,,,go and fuck your Ken ass

there was a girl that died from the abuse of her father saying that the gods told him to punish the girl

really? Religion cause conflict? So that means WW2, which is the most destructive war in human history is a conflict between what religion really? When Enola Gay drop atom bomb on top of 100,000 civilians in Hiroshima and Nagasaki, did they cry "Allahuakbar"?

It's not Religion. As an Atheist I used to think that. But now I know that it's Politics and Tribalism. These things will come with or without the belief in a God….. Saying it's Religion is just a scapegoat. We use it to try and push away from the fact that all people are warlike and we all have it in us to do these things. It's humanity and it will always happen no matter what.

Well i think we should update religions and make them suitable for our times. For example if "jihad" (which is sacrificing your self for god by any forms) used to work about 1400 years ago to let the islam grow and make life easy for Muslims, if done by the same principles can lead to terrorism today. But i think if we could have a right interpretation of "jihad" in our times it would be sacrificing your money, time and energy to help thoes in need for god's sake.
I mean we won't use an ancient medical technique to cure diseases now a days why we do that with religions.

Let’s take violence out of the picture, and put in any type of conflict. I’d say religion is the root of a lot of conflicts going on in today’s world, violent or not.

Wish you would go into more detail… it's like only looking at heads on a two-sided coin there was political motives behind them but they use religion to control the people and die for them you're not going to convince a person to kill themselves for someone else's wealth you going to convince that population that God wants them to die for the country…. he's not wrong he's just not telling the whole story.

He says it was all political… yet he couldn't even deny that they were raising religious Flags and tricking their people into believing that if you die for your country you die for God.. it was a way I'm getting people to do what you want… duh
195,035,000 deaths in the name of religion. I guess it's not much considering the world population is more or less 6.8 billion.

Most of the things mentioned in the video IS caused by religion… the people like ISIS for example very strongly believe they act on God's will and take what God gave them, so even if the people just use God's name, religion is stil at the heart of these wars, those people's religions make them believe they are chosen and the earth or part of it is theirs to take cause they believe God tell them to do so and in many instances, those religions believe that anyone who don't serve there flavor of God should be destroyed. In Islam countries for example the punishment for apostasy is death, a very violent death.

why is everyone attacking christianity
its not us that are blowing up malls , killing gays and "infidels" , and stoning woman and yelling "allahu akbar"
in fact Christianity is one of the most liberal and tolerant religions on earth

Religions build false hope and beliefs upon false and untrue conditions and assumptions and that is why violence is eventually the outcome.

realigons separation cause war &producing phycopaths. ……Example. …surah 9 : 29. ….Bvg 8:10. …lead to uncertainty. ……

Well im gonna predict that this video is gonna be some people saying that religion is great to not piss of some people

We've used violence ever since we became carnivores. If we were religious before we were carnivores. Religion could be the cause of violence. If religion came after we were carnivores then either to become a carnivore or something before that was the cause of violence. Most likely violence was inherited like with any species determinism to live in the action of self defense, or we mimic other animals fighting and began fighting with other animals thinking it was a form of communication. This is a ROTC and I do believe in the Resurrection of Jesus Christ. He is my lord and savior.

When people are throwing people off of tall buildings and executing innocent people for being apostates or homosexual under the influence of a text specifically saying to kill such people, it's a lie and a disservice to those murdered victims and their loved ones to say religion doesn't cause violence.

"It takes a religion to make a good person do bad things."

Surah Al-Baqara, Verse 256:

There is no compulsion in religion; truly the right way has become clearly distinct from error; therefore, whoever disbelieves in the shaitan (satan) and believes in Allah he indeed has laid hold on the firmest handle, which shall not break off, and Allah is Hearing, Knowing.
